The Steps

1st – Paddy Bevin (CCC Team)

2nd – Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal)

3rd – Peter Sagan (Bora- hansgrohe)

The Route

Stage 2 offered a little more than stage 1 did. The stage was shortened by 25km, due to the expected scorching heat. The famous Checker Hill featured after the peloton had made their way into the Adelaide hills. The peloton then headed for the sprint finish in Angaston. Slightly more technical than yesterday, but nothing to write home about.

The Break

Jason Lea and Artyom Zakharov found themselves in the early break for a second day in a row and they were joined by Movistar rider Jaime Castrillo. Lea took the maximum points at the KOM to extend his lead in that competition. Like yesterday, the early escape showed little enterprise to make a genuine bid for stage honours, instead, accumulation of points and seconds on the road were the priority. They were caught by the peloton with 50km to go.

The Finish

Another messy finish at this years Tour Down Under. A big crash with 700 metres to go happened 30 wheels from the front of the bunch, with some serious victims expected to be reported from the high speed crash. Team Jumbo-Visma were the only team that had a large number of riders in the final few kilometres for their sprinter Danny Van Poppel. Mitchelton-Scott were there helping Daryl Impey and besides that, it was riders doing their own thing. Luis Leon Sanchez (LLS) went early with 400 metres to go, managing to gap the peloton. Patrick Bevin was having none of it, launching his sprint down the right hand side with 300 metres to go from tenth place in the group. He caught LLS, and not even Caleb Ewan could come round the Kiwi in the final metres. The win sees Bevin move into the leaders jersey for stage 3 tomorrow.

The Votes

3- Paddy Bevin- Hit it out early and back himself in. Looks good on the results sheet with Ewan and Sagan in 2nd and 3rd.

2-Jasper Philipsen- At only 20 years of age, he has a fifth and a sixth at this years race. Top five today in a finish like this, huge credit to the rookie.

1- Jason Lea- Extends his lead in the KOM jersey. Smart business not frying himself all today. He will look for more opportunities later in the week.
